Display Energy Certificates

Display Energy Certificates are designed to show the energy performance and carbon emissions of public buildings, rated from grades A to G (with ‘A’ being the most efficient).

The duration of validity of the DEC is determined by the total useful floor area –
1 year if more than 1000sqm, and 10 years for 250-1000sqm.

  • it’s at least partially occupied by a public authority (eg council, leisure centre, college, NHS trust)

  • it has a total floor area of over 250 square metres

  • it’s frequently visited by the public

Public authorities must have a DEC for a building if all the following are true -

Energy efficiency rating chart with color-coded categories from A to G, indicating the building's energy use as typical and annually, with energy source breakdown, showing electricity and other fuels, and renewable energy percentage.
Table showing previous operational ratings and CO2 emissions for June 2023, 2022, and 2021, with ratings in green and orange and emissions data in a separate section.
